Recently, I was sitting in my corner "office table" at my favorite Panera Bread. I almost made a spectacle of myself as the tears began streaming down my face. In just a moment's time, I was overcome with a sense of feeling weary. So, I grabbed my Bible and started searching for something to calm my mind and heart. I stumbled on
Matthew 11:28
: Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
I've heard and read that verse hundreds of times, but I decided to dig a little deeper into that precious verse and see if there was anything more to it than the obvious. And guess what? There was!
This verse is an invitation to ALL who labor. Labor means weary. Worn out. So, if you are weary and worn out, then this verse is for you! And what about that first word, "Come." The word "come" is written in the present tense which means: Come NOW! Not tomorrow! NOW. Come at ONCE! It is an act of instantaneous faith that will bring instantaneous peace. Come now! Rely on Jesus and HE will give you rest!
Here's something else I found interesting. Notice it says, "Come unto Me. Me! Jesus! Not, your BFF. Not your sister. Not your spouse. Go past all of these and run straight to Jesus! The One who gave everything on the cross of Calvary so that you can experience and walk in rest, peace, freedom and healing. If you want rest, you will find it nowhere else but by pouring all of your heavy burdens out, laying them down at the nail pierced feet of Jesus … at the foot of the cross.
This rest is a gift to us. Money can't buy it. It can't be earned. It is Christ's invitation to us to just come as we are. Weary. Burdened. Hurting. Confused. Just come as you are! Be real with Him. Tell HIM all about it. Trust Him with your deepest heart concerns. Let it all go! Lay it all down at His feet and you will see His promise fulfilled. He will give you rest!
