Jesus Christ Unveiled

“ Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachtani?” my God, my God why have you forsaken me?”  Mark 15 vs 34. Those were the last words of Jesus on the cross.  You know something, the name Jesus is the third most common name on the face of planet earth. Yes I am aware that over 3.5 million people in India have not heard of him. I know that about 1.5 million people in Guinea do not know him. And the list goes on and on.

All these I know, but just like the brand “Coca Cola”, the name Jesus Christ has an undeniably great recognition even in places where the gospel has not been preached.  The big question is who is He? A martyr? A spirit? Or perhaps, a myth?  Well, let’s check the scriptures. Mark 8 vs 29 “ Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Phillippi; and on the road He asked His disciple saying to them: But who do men  say that I am ?”  When they told Him. He then asked peter, “Who do you say that I am”

Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ” Wow… what a confession! Peter did not stammer when he said those words. If he did, the bible would have indicated it. He spoke with so much effrontery and audacity such that even Jesus had to say: “flesh and blood hath not revealed this to you but the spirit of God”. Even Jesus knew that it took more than mental accent to discern such a deep and sacred revelation.

Sadly a lot of people did not share in Peter’s opinion. They labeled Him with different kinds of appellation one that portrayed Him to be that exact opposite of who He was. Of course the people needed a messiah, but they expected He would come down from heaven with a loud noise and a multitude of angels. They thought He would come covered with a cloak made of gold and a rope of sparkling silver. They didn’t think he would come from the house of a carpenter or even conceived in a manger!

And do I blame them? Emphatically no! It is only human to be like that. We as humans we are mostly persuaded by what we see than anything else. “Seeing is believing” We see first; then we believe, perfectly rational. It has been that way even before we happened on the scene. They could not fathom the savior of mankind coming so seemingly insignificantly and too quietly. They could not comprehend how one who claimed He was from God would have such a humble, ordinary and normal beginning.  No!

They heard the stories of course, how that God made a way in the red sea…How that God sent plaques to Egypt. Yes they were also told of the miracles in the wilderness during their exodus from the land of Egypt, I mean the mannas, the quails and the pillar and cloud of fire. They knew it all. So thought “how on earth could this Jesus of whom we witnessed His birth, declare Himself “the messiah” He never said He of was of the messiahs; no He said He was “The” messiah.  That really aggravated them.

Let’s quickly examine some facts from the scripture. 1Samuel 16 vs 6 -7 “ So it was, when they came, that he look at Eliab and said, surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him, But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look at the outward appearance , but the lord looks at the heart”. 1 kings 19 vs 11 “Then He said Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. And behold the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a still small voice.

Yes, God is big and does big things. But He doesn’t always work that way. God wanted to show us the true meaning of love. His undying love for the best of all His creations, Man is beyond what mere words could explain. God knows that love is an action word. Love is seen and acted. He knew that no love exists without sacrifice. A worthy sacrifice, a sacrifice, so priceless yet so costly. One, such that a life had to be taken.   Isaiah 53 vs 7 “ He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so opened not His mouth.” Taking it further Isaiah 53 vs 10 “Yet it pleased the lord to bruise Him, He has put him to grief. When you make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seeds, He shall prolong His days. And pleasure of the lord shall prosper in His hands”

Let’s look at the scriptures again. John 14 vs 6. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”.  He said it boldly and unapologetically. Also let’s look at Luke 3 vs  22 “ And the Holy spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Here we see God Himself through the Holy Spirit openly affirms and unveils Christ’s true identity.

Jesus Christ was sent by God to restore humanity back to Him. He was hundred percent God and hundred percent man. He felt the hurt. He knew the pain. He wept. He cried. No one could have done the job better! God and man. So great, yet decided to become to small. So mighty, yet so humble. Even to the point of death. A perfect but rare breed.

The only savior of the world , Jesus. The giver of life Jesus. Man’s only hope of bliss of peace and joy.  He is the beginning and the ending. The one who spoke to raging storm. The first begotten of the dead.  He is coming again. Yes He is, just like the times of Noah. He would come when men least expect. He loves you. He existed because of you. He still lives. Would you not rather lived your life with Him and for Him?
