The Making of a King

They are kings and there are Kings. But who really is a king? I know him… I have seen him.  You have seen him too. He is sovereign, he is mighty and powerful. He rules and reigns. Yes I know all these. But he was not always that way. No king was conceived with a crown.

In 1 Sam16 vs 7 – 13. Now there’s something very interesting I need you to see. Samuel, the prophet of God was sent to anoint another King to supplant Saul. Samuel yielded he called all the children of Jesse and more than twice he nearly anointed the wrong person.

I don’t blame him… were I in his shoes; I could have made the same mistake. Let’s look at verse 10 and 11, “Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The lord has not chosen these” And Samuel said to Jesse , Are all the young men here?” Then he said, there remains yet the youngest, and there he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel to Jesse “Send and bring him in. For we will not sit down till he comes here”

Okay…let’s quickly see something very important here too. Seven good and powerful looking men were presented to the prophet Samuel. But not one of them met God’s qualification for kingship. Now that should really strike you as odd. They had the looks; they had the charm and everything humanly desirable by any man. Yet, to God; they were not even close to it. Amazing!

Is this not what happens today, in our world? That a woman is pretty does not necessarily mean she would have a pretty marriage. Or that you have the best education in the world assures you a successful and prosperous life. No! I have seen the wealthy beg for health, I have the seen nobles plead for death. You look at them; you wish to be like them. But the truth is….They wish you knew more!

Verse 12 of the same chapter says: “So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes and good looking. And the lord said, “Arise and anoint him for this is the one ” Wow! What a mighty irony! How can a ruddy shepherd boy be the ONE?  No…it was not because he was handsome too…far from it. If you would only concentrate now you will understand.

God never makes until you have been made. Yes David, was ruddy… But he was not just ruddy, He was a ruddy shepherd. He had fought the bears and lions. 1 Sam 17 vs 36.  He once delivered a sheep from a beast’s mouth. Although young, the man David had been trained, trained to face any kind of challenge, any form of obstacle.

So he was not perturbed or bothered by Goliath’s fierce looks, height or words. As a matter a fact, I don’t think he heard him. David spoke as though Goliath was not there at all. He knew himself. He saw what others didn’t see.

to be continued
