The True Gift

I just turned seventy- eight.
Tina my wife died a long time ago.
I loved her…more than she knew.
She left me four children

Very beautiful and wonderful they are.
Just one look at them makes my heart melt.
They bring me joy.
They make me whole.

Well…that day was memorable.
Michael bought me a yacht.
Woodley got me a Bmw,
Charley changed my furniture

And Anita…she threw me a party.
What a life! With all those money,
I didn’t expect less.
They didn’t disappoint me.
I’m lucky to be their father.

A few hours later,
The party was over,
And one after the other
My kids left; once again;
I was all alone.

Well, I drank some champagne,
And went straight to bed.
I had barely closed my eyes
When I heard the knock.
I was peeved… very at that.
I laid there just to be sure.
Then it came again.

“Who the hell is that?
Don’t you ever sleep?
It’s eleven for Pete’s sake!”
When I finally opened;
Guess who was standing at the doorway;
Madam Bullamly…my house maid.

You! What do you want?
“Sorry to bother you sir?”
Yes…is there a problem Madam?
No sir…I remember today sir?
Today…you say? What about it?

It’s your birthday sir…
And does that in anyway explain why you’re here?
I brought you a gift sir…
You…a gift! This is a joke right?
No sir…here it is sir.”

I didn’t thank her…why should I
She interrupted my sweet sound sleep.
And for what,
A useless bible!
A bloody waste of precious time,

That was my thought then…
Seem like yesterday now…
Today, I have over thirty of them.
Even at ninety I read as though
I am far younger…
That night…what she gave me was more than
A book…a bible.
She gave me my life.
God’s words. The true gift
Today…when I speak to God,
He listens…just because of that gift
